A Walkthrough is an interactive, step-by-step guide that simulates real-life tasks, helping learners practice processes in a safe, visual environment.

It’s ideal for skill-based learning, offering hands-on experience before working with actual tools or systems. For example, you might guide someone through formatting a table in Excel—clicking through each part of the interface as they learn.

Why use a walkthrough?

Modern learning isn’t just about reading or watching—it’s about doing. Walkthroughs turn passive learning into active practice, helping learners build confidence and bridge the gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it.

Here’s why walkthroughs make a difference:

  • Learners retain more when they interact with content, rather than just consuming it passively.

  • They reinforce real skills, helping learners actively apply what they’ve learned.

  • They provide a safe space to practice, so learners can build confidence before working in real systems.

How to create a Walkthrough

To add a Walkthrough to your course:

  1. Click the “+ Add content block” button.

  2. Navigate to the Interactive options and drag and drop the Walkthrough block from the list to the page.

  3. Click “Start creating” to open the Walkthrough Editor.

From here, you can start adding steps to guide your learners through the process. You’ll have three step types to choose from:

  • Info step – Great for setting context or explaining what’s coming next. Think of it as your narration or setup.

  • Image step – The core of the walkthrough. Upload screenshots and add clickable hotspots that simulate interaction. Learners click on parts of the image to proceed, mimicking real actions.

  • Video step (coming soon) – Ideal for showing more complex flows in motion.

Note: The video step is currently unavailable, but it’s coming soon. Stay tuned for future updates!

Tip: You can mix and match step types to design the learning flow that fits your content best.

Adding an Info Step

To create an Info step, click the + New step button in the left panel and select Info step from the dropdown. This will add a new Info step to your walkthrough and open it by default.

You’ll see a simple editor where you can customize the content and layout. Here’s what you can do:

  • Change the layout to Only text or Text over image using the Change layout button at the top of the editor.

  • Add and edit text directly in the content area using a simplified text editor.

  • Add a call-to-action button with a link to another step. You can update the button text (up to 30 characters) and link it to a new or existing step in your walkthrough.

  • Want to add another button? Click the Add button to include a second one. You can remove this second button later if needed.

  • If you're using the Text over image layout, you can upload an image and add alt text to it.

Tip: You can rename your step by clicking the step title at the top. Step names are limited to 50 characters.

Adding an Image Step

To add an Image step, click the +New step button in the editor and choose Image step from the dropdown.

Start by clicking the Change image option to upload a screenshot or visual you want to use.

Once your image is in place, you can begin adding hotspots—interactive areas that learners can click on to simulate actions or navigate through the walkthrough.

Adding and Customizing Hotspots

After uploading your image, click and drag to create the hotspots and place interactive points on the screen. Each hotspot can be customized to guide the learner:

  • Hotspot text – Add a short instruction or label to give context.

  • Step link – Choose which step the hotspot should lead to by clicking on the gear icon.

  • Highlight color – Select a color to visually indicate clickable areas.

  • Text box position – Select where the text appears in relation to the hotspot (e.g., auto, left, right, up, or down).

These options help you create a clear, interactive path for learners to follow, making each step intuitive and engaging.

Once you have finished adding all the steps, simply link the last one to the End walkthrough option.

Important

  • Walkthroughs are not gradable as they’re designed for practice—not for testing or scoring.

  • This content block is not available in portrait mode or in the PDF version.

  • The first hotspot or button will automatically link to the next step.

  • If you add more than one hotspot/button, auto-linking is disabled.

Authoring Tips and Best Practices

  • There's no step limit, but we recommend staying under 100 steps for smooth performance.

  • Use clear, descriptive step names during creation to make linking easier.

  • Keep hotspot instructions short and focused—or remove text entirely if visual clicking is enough.

  • Use explanatory steps to provide helpful transitions and context.

  • Avoid crowding too many hotspots into a single image.

  • Position hotspots fully within the visible screen frame.

  • Make sure hotspots are fully visible and large enough to tap (especially on mobile).

  • Always preview your walkthrough to ensure everything is clickable, readable, and visually aligned.
